(The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc Mentorship program is modeled after the Florida State University Mentoring Program Guidelines 2011-2012)
Executive Summary:
Perrone-Ambrose system will be utilized to prepare The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. in the implementation strategies that will be needed to finalize The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s (TBM) own mentoring system. The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. will learn, through the use of this system, a formal mentoring approach to support retention, diversity, recruiting and succession planning.
The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. through the use of the Perrone- Ambrose systems, will incorporate its current goals and objectives while establishing strategic goals and plans for implementing mentoring.
The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. will develop the strategies for selecting and matching mentors with mentees. Through the use of the Perrone-Ambrose comprehensive mentorship education system, The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc will obtain the skills-set necessary for the development of the best way for communicating appropriate mentorship processes to the organization.
Perrone- Ambrose has 25 years of experience in the field of Mentorship Training/Education. Selected by The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. staff members will be chosen to attend a 3 day Intensive Mentorship Certification process wherein each member will receive a license and the ability “to train” trainers as well as to provide the administrative guidance necessary to fully educate The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s other staff with academic enhancement and the skill-set required to develop and institute mentors into the general population..
3 Day Public Licensing Workshops “Train the Trainer” – instructors complete a 3 day “train the trainer” program in which they work with the “Leaders” guide, receive instruction on presenting the training presentations, and practices leading the experiential exercises to be conducted with future program participates. The instructors receive an in-depth briefing on the leaning theory and the methodology behind the various segments of the program.
The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc Training Series (Core Curricula)
The Training Sessions will cover the following:
1- Mentor Training.
2- Mentee Training.
3- Link- up Sessions.
4- Check- up Meetings.
5- Final Strength Meetings
6- Transition Meetings.
The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. then will be able to hold its own “Mentorship” certification and training classes within the The Thoughts Of Black Men Chapters through the use of (TBM’S) own designated instructors (Each certified through the Perrone-Ambrose Systems).
Licenses and use of all materials will be provided by the Perrone- Ambrose Systems to those members sent for training fully certifying and licensing The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc. to operate a mentorship education and training center.
Total Cost
$2100 “Train the Trainer” Certification Series (3 Days includes) Licensee, Certification, and workbooks= includes mentor and mentee
Training TBM overall cost $2,600
1- Life Coach attachment- $1,000

Previous training experiences with: BP,EPA, Federal Reserve Bank, Glano Smith Klein, Marshall Space Center, NASA, Newell Rubbermaid Towers Perrin, University Of Chicago Hospitals, US Dept of Defense.
Perrone- Ambrose member training focuses on the skills necessary for managers to make the transitions from telling and fixing to empowering and building capacity in those whom they train to train mentors.
Mentor trainers learn skills and have successful experiences as mentors in formal mentoring relationships that they carry back to the people they lead and manage every day. Perrone-Ambrose offers the option of licensing so that an organization may run its own mentoring program following a 3 day training experience.

What is a Mentor and it’s Benefits:
1- A person gaining personal satisfaction from enriching another person’s experience through the leadership development.
2- A person giving back through the development of people identified as “students” to birth leaders for the future by personality and professionally supporting their growth.
3- A person that enhances coaching, feedback and existing leadership skills.
4- A person providing exposure to new and different thinking styles, knowledge and perspectives.
What is a Mentee and it’s Benefits:
1- A person gaining leadership attributes and an understanding of leadership as it relates to professional and personal development.
2- A person learning the meaning and the application of leadership skills in a variety of environments such as the workshops and public through the eyes and experiences of leadership with diverse backgrounds.
3- A person gaining access to the experiences of professionals for guidance in time management, communication and networking skills.
4- A person developing skills and knowledge to become future mentors.
Implement Strategy
Logistical Preparation for The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc:
1- Register for The Thoughts of Black Men Inc. online @ the TBM’S website using the registration form provided.
2- Once registration form is completed the TBM Mentorship Program Coordinator (identify who this will be) will conduct a matching exercise based on information provided on the registration form.
3- This will include consideration of factors such as educational (discipline) background, career aspirations, common professional interest, leadership experience, availability, and location where applicable.
4- All efforts will be made to match a mentee with a mentor who is best placed to assist.
5- After the matching process is completed Mentors and Mentees will be notified of their match.
6- The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s Mentorship Program Coordinator will provide each participant with contact details for their match.
7- Information introducing the details of the program, their assignment and program guidelines on the TBM agenda goals, objectives, and methodologies will be provided.
8- It will then be the mentor’s responsibility to contact the mentee to initiate the mentoring process. However it is acceptable for the contact to be initiated by either party.
9- Note: Access to The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s Mentorship Program- depends on the availability of mentors and mentees (therefore active recruitment efforts must always be in place) If a match is not immediately available, the program coordinator will notify the applicants and ask to maintain their applications on file until a suitable match is identified.
10- Once contact is established, a mentor and mentee start the mentoring process by collaboratively and signing the “The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s Mentoring Agreement”.
11- The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s mentoring agreement will build the foundation of a relationship by communicating and recording the agreed mentoring objectives, methods, and frequency of communication and defines how activities such as meetings will be conducted, as well as how the mentor and the mentee will go about achieving the agreed upon goals.
12- Successful mentoring requires the “right” relationship between a mentor and mentee. If for any reason a mentor and a mentee are unable to build the “right” mentoring relationship, the program coordinator will re-match the individuals as soon as an opportunity become available.

The Thoughts Of Black Men – Program Participation Requirements:
Notes: While there are expectations in relations to conduct and quality, The Thoughts of Black Men Inc. understands the demands on both the time of mentors and mentees. Therefore the program allows mentors and mentees flexibility to choose the mode of communication that best fits their schedules.
Once informed about your mentoring partner, you must do the following:
1- Work together to discuss development expectations, set objectives and complete a formal “TBM Mentoring Agreement”
Note: The “TBM” Mentoring Agreement is available on the TBM website and is available by downloading. Sample is also available on the weblink as well.
2- Agree upon a set schedule to interact at least once per month. The schedule communication time should be included in the “TBM Mentoring Agreement”.
3- Provide the “TBM Mentorship Program Coordinator” with a signed copy of the “TBM Mentoring Agreement” by fax, mail or email. The information for submitting the signed copies of the Mentoring Agreement are also found on the TBM website.
4- Fulfill commitments on providing adequate notice of changes to your mentor or mentee (whichever applies).
5- Participate in quarterly evaluations, The TBM’s Program Coordinator will be communicating periodically, but you will also be provided with mid-program/satisfaction evaluation surveys as well as an annual learning outcome evaluation which will measure progress towards completion of your mentoring objections.
6- Communicate with the TBM’s Program Coordinator -to keep him/her informed of any mentoring relationships changes or concerns, or changes in your contract information.
7- Observe confidentiality and professional standards of behavior and safety at all times –( Failure to do so may result in your expulsion from the mentorship program) You will not discuss with others what you discuss with your mentoring partner unless you have his/her agreement.
Create and maintain a safe environment (Example: face to face meetings in neutral professional public based areas).
Implementation Strategy:
The Thoughts Of Black Men: Program First Meeting Guidelines
1- Clarify expectations about the extent to which you will offer guidance concerning professional as well as personal issues as you work together to define learning objectives.
2- Discuss and define common goals and focus.
3- Discuss what you offer: information, skills experience.
4- Decide how you will interact in the future.
5- Discuss questions or concerns.
The Thoughts Of Black Men: Mentorship Activities
1- Provide direction to or list relevant books, web resources, articles, or other resources.
2- Serve as a resource broker.
3- Provide job shadowing opportunities or-onsite visits (If applicable)
4- Discuss training and educational opportunities.
5- Invite your mentor/mentee to attend a campus or other related activity.
6- Suggest methods for advancing mentee’s growth,
7- Offer assistance in long term career development and growth as well as professional networking (If applicable)
8- Recommend development activities.
9- Communicate experiences and challenges as a leader.
10- Attend business related events together
11- Provide effective feedback.
12- Acknowledge areas to your mentee where you don’t have necessary skills and refer him/her to other resources.
Mentor’s Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s
1- Challenge, motivate, inspire, and encourage.
2- Be patient and build trust.
3- Offer alternative perspectives.
4- Encourage self-directed reflection.
5- Encourage analysis and problem solving.
6- Establish boundaries.
7- Remember personal safety.
Mentor’s Don’ts
1- Don’t simply provide solutions, but advise or identify resources to assist the mentee to make their own decisions.
2- Don’t assume responsibility for the students academic or career success. Rather provide feedback on tactics, tips, networking successfully and comments on various strategies to success.
3- Don’t offer “personal” counseling or life coaching that is not related to professional or personal development.
4- Don’t neglect agreed commitments without explanation.
5- Don’t hesitate to contact your mentee if you haven’t heard from him/her in a while.
6- Don’t meet in places that make you uncomfortable.
Ending The Partnership:
The mentoring partnership may be ended for various reasons.
1- Completion of agreed objectives.
2- Student has completed educational experience.
3- The relation is not beneficial to both parties.
Participants will need to contact The Thoughts Of Black Men Inc.’s Mentorship Program Coordinator to provide notice that the partnership has ended. Be sure to complete end of program forms/ evaluations and survey reports (All forms are available on the TBM’s website for download)
You can always choose to continue an informal mentorship partnership relationship after gradations even if it isn’t through The Thoughts Of Black Men.
